The Better Half, Hove, turns one!
When Simon Stern, owner of Hove’s newest pub, The Better Half, first clapped eyes on its site, he knew it was for him. “When I first saw the site of what was formerly The Red Lion, I thought it had great potential and I was attracted to the traditional, L-shape layout, which I think is welcoming,” said Simon. “I know the area really well as I lived nearby for nearly 15 years, so I know that the surrounding roads are as lovely as the people that live in them – especially those that frequent the pub!”
“We opened last year on May 8th, and the first year of any business is always a challenge, especially as I had no previous experience in hospitality, but I have embraced it, as have my brilliant staff. I was extremely happy when Andy Keir, our head chef came on board at The Better Half; he is unflappable in the kitchen and has a tremendous eye for detail and the flavours he brings together, ably helped by Saeed Bizaki, our sous chef, who is amazing.”
“Andy has just produced a fantastically varied summer menu that caters for all diners. This ranges from healthy dishes such as chargrilled salmon salad finished with teriyaki-style dressing and toasted sesame seeds, to what is always my favourite staple on the menu and a delicious treat in summer or winter: the bacon cheeseburger with hand cut fries. Naughty, but so nice!”
“Our Monday night quizzes, which support a different charity each week, have already become a great success with locals and charities alike looking forward to getting involved, and we’re excited to be starting some Open Mic nights very soon. Watch this space, and please don’t hesitate to pop in and see us.”
