Sussex Art Courses

For some, art comes easily, flowing almost like magic from paintbrush, pen, or fingers. For others, although they may know exactly what it is they want to create, getting their vision out into the world can be tricky. It is not, however, an impossible task, no matter what medium or style you choose. Art courses can be a huge help, giving expert tutelage, useful guidance, and hints and tips on how to make your vision come to life.

There are many art courses to be found around Sussex for all abilities, styles, and individual needs.

Emily Ball // Partridge Green

Emily Ball’s art courses are all about showing just how diverse art can really be, and allowing the student the freedom needed – along with expert advice – to really understand the subject, and create something beautiful. The tutors (Emily Ball, Julian Brown, Kate Sollohub, Garry Goodman, Nick Bodimeade, John Skinner, Helen Turner, Andrzej Jackowski, Simon Carter, and Gary Wragg) are all practicing artists, and each one is keen to share their wealth of experience with their students.

Courses – of which there are many – include painting from drawing, the confident painter, simply paint, putting people into painting, 3D painting, a number of masterclasses, and a five day residency.

Prices for these courses all vary, from £140 to £950 (this price is for the painting in the Algarve course).

Sky Blue Art Classes // Worthing

Run by Jane Denman, an experienced tutor who is herself a fine artist, the classes at Sky Blue are tailored to the requirements of the students, allowing a free flowing, exciting, energetic and creative environment.

Prices vary depending on what classes you wish to join. The Thursday morning drop in class is £16 per session (£50 if you pay for four sessions in advance), and the more structured watercolour and drawing courses are £80 – these are 6 week courses for both beginners and those who want to ‘brush up’ on their painting skills.

The Mill Studio // Arundel

The studio director at The Mill is Piers Ottey, a well renowned artist from Sussex who was featured in June’s issue of insideSUSSEX, so you know you are in good hands here! At The Mill, the atmosphere is relaxed and the creativity free flowing, with all standards and interests welcome; as they say, “Skill and experience are not requirements, but enthusiasm is!”

Courses include oil painting (including talks, critiques, and visits), life drawing (an untutored workshop in which students can work in any medium they wish to), watercolour exploration (which also talks about collage and gouache), elements of drawing (so much is covered here, including tonal studies and perspective), and drawing to painting (diverse subject matter is expected and encouraged). Prices range from £20 to £395.

Dairy Studio // Lewes

The Dairy Studio makes the most of its surroundings, offering oil painting, landscape work, and life drawing – and in the summer it’s time to head out and about and paint from the natural world around you in this beautiful part of the county.

Susie Monnington, an established artist herself, takes the classes which include meetings for young artists (aged 8-14), weekly adult painting groups, Sunday oil paint workshops, and even painting parties.

Prices range from £35 to £165.

Lindfield Art Studio // Lindfield

With courses for adults and children, beginners and experts, after school classes, holiday clubs, art parties, one-to-one tuition, and exhibitions, you shouldn’t be surprised to discover that the Lindfield Art Studio near Haywards Heath has exactly what you are looking for when it comes to discovering your artistic forte. Lindfield Art Studio is a purpose-built space for anyone and everyone to learn about art and enjoy being creative.

Classes are run by Leesa Le May (who also organises the Lindfield Art Festival), an eclectic artist who works in various media, making her the perfect choice no matter what you choose to do with your talent.

There are many courses to choose from here, including jam sessions (drop in sessions for any media, any subject, any skill level) acrylic painting workshops, printing workshops, book and paper making, pastels and charcoal, and even classes for toddlers and pre-schoolers.

Prices range from £5 to £185.

Sussex Downs College // Eastbourne & Lewes

Some of the art courses on offer at the Sussex Down College (at both their Eastbourne and Lewes campuses) end with recognised qualifications such as an A-level, and some are offered in a less formal way. But whatever your reason for joining an art class at the college, you should be able to find something that suits you. There is art and design (A-level, BTEC, and diploma), exploring the creative arts, fine art, and even a course on making a patchwork quilt from start to finish – a different – and absolutely beautiful – way to create.

Prices depend on your individual circumstances, and which course and/or qualification you desire to take.

Kate’s Art Classes // Chichester

Kate Tugwell knows exactly what she is doing when it comes to art; she is a professional portrait artist and tutor, graphic designer, graphic software trainer, and an excellent baker too! Working from her beautiful thatched cottage near Chichester, Kate also offers art courses for those who, like her, have a love of art and want to explore it further.

Kate offers a variety of classes, each one designed to take you through a subject from beginning to end, but allowing you to work at your own pace. Encouragement is guaranteed, as are copious amounts of tea, coffee, and homemade cakes.

Courses include acrylics, pastels, getting your brain to draw like an artist, portrait courses, one to one tuition, and drop in sessions.

Prices range from £20 to £240.

Michael Cruickshank // Spithurst

Artist Michael Cruickshank offers a choice of fantastic courses taken either in his studio at Bradness Gallery in Spithurst, or out on location is inspiring Sussex. Each course has a maximum capacity of five students to allow Michael to really get to know each person, and work with them honing their skills and talents. It also means that even absolute beginners can enjoy learning from a master.

Choose from a one-, two-, or three-day course during which Michael will explain the essential elements of landscape painting and give you exercises to do which show you exactly how to go about getting started, getting the right textures, and finishing to a high standard. Learn how to stretch paper, paint skies and clouds, create a sense of depth, picture construction, and reflections amongst many other fantastic skills.

Prices range from £125 to £375.
