Billy’s on the Beach puts the b into October
Here’s a tongue twister for you – Billy’s on the Beach Beer & Batter Weekend in Bracklesham Bay.
Whether you say it fast or slow, make sure you put the dates in your diary. The event starts on Friday, October 13 and runs through until end of Sunday, October 15, with a celebration of seasonal food, freshly caught fish from the Sussex coast, and local beers.
The popular seaside café has teamed up with two of its neighbours to create a special beer and batter menu – local fishmongers, Something Fishy, just two minutes’ drive down the road in East Wittering, and almost-neighbour, Gold Mark Craft Beers, based in Arundel. As well as Billy’s famous haddock and chips, the feast will include a selection of fresh fish either grilled, pan fried or dipped in variety of herb flours or beer batters.
The Billy’s team will also be offering food pairing notes to its customers to match some of Gold Mark’s award-winning beers and lagers to dishes on its extensive autumn menu.
“Everyone loves classic fish and chips, but we thought we would help our customers explore all the amazing crumbs and coatings that can be used for a variety of fish,” says Brett Dyson, Billy’s on the Beach part-owner/manager. “The menu will have something for everyone, including fish served simply grilled or pan-fried, and will make an ideal feast following an autumn walk along our lovely coastline.”
Mark Lehmann, founder of Gold Mark Craft Beers, has created a special brew for the Beer and Batter Weekend, called Strawberry Stout, a 4% ABV Belgian-style beer with just a hint of strawberry wine, which he says will go perfect with Billy’s meat and fish dishes, and can even be drunk with desserts.
“Billy’s on the Beach already serves several of our beers so it is great to be using our beer in the batter for this special weekend,” says Mark. “People are familiar pairing certain wines with food, so it is about time we and Billy’s help beer lovers to enjoy their pint with their favourite dish.”
The Beer & Batter menu will be available from midday until 8.30pm each day, in addition to Billy’s regular autumn menu which includes seafood platters, marinated chicken dishes, succulent burgers and burritos. Renowned for supporting local seasonal foods, the menu is a moveable feast depending on the time of the year. All its fish and shellfish comes from Something Fishy, which is delivered every morning, packed in ice.
Located right on the seafront, Billy’s on the Beach is a popular destination in the autumn for walkers and beachcombers. It is just a 20-minute stroll from East Wittering, or a leisurely cycle from Chichester along the Salterns Way. Every Thursday, from end of September until June, it hosts Local Nights, which draws foodies from near and far to enjoy a two- or three-course menu of seasonal specials using locally produced ingredients.
