Around the World with Sofitel’s Urban Café

You don’t have to set foot on a plane to go on a quick globe trot of delicious dishes in the Urban Café at Sofitel London Gatwick. insideSUSSEX discovered this gem of an eatery after checking in at the North Terminal ready for the start of a family holiday recently.

The extensive menu takes the taste buds on a tour of Asia, the Caribbean, Europe and home again to Britain without having to fasten your seatbelt. Aiming for a `street meets chic’ theme, Urban Café has gone big on Bowl Food. There are 13 choices, all claiming to be `a meal in itself’, from the best-selling slow-cooked Jamaican chuck beef and sweet potato pepper pot to Ramen noodles in a spicy Asian broth, or a bowlful of Scottish Mussels, cooked with a kick of chorizo and smoked paprika.

If you prefer a plate to a bowl, then there are the `Urban Classics’ from Teriyaki blackened salmon fillet to crispy Tamarind-glazed duck leg with pak choi and oyster sauce .  For those who don’t like their palate to stray too far from home, there is also fish and chips with fresh haddock fillets cooked in a panko crumb, and a flare-grilled sirloin steak in peppercorn and brandy sauce. And that’s just a snapshot as the menu itself runs to more than 40 items, not including sides, from sharing tapas to pizzas, hot sandwiches, burgers and salads. Try the delicious superfood salad with quinoa, lentils, omega rich seeds and blueberries if you need to wake up the palate before a long-haul flight.

Food is served all day and is cooked in the same kitchens as the two-AA rosette La Brasserie restaurant, located just behind the Urban Café.

Designed as an open terrace, the Urban Café has views over the Sofitel’s atrium and is in earshot of the calming sounds of the central water feature. The efficient service means you can grab a quick bite to eat before heading to bed ready for an early flight the next day or start your holiday early by treating the family to a delicious meal in the relaxed ambience of the Sofitel London Gatwick. That should set you up nicely for the short stroll to the North Terminal, via a covered walkway, and the hustle and bustle of the airport, passport control and duty free.
