A warm and genuine welcome from John and Jane Turner and their team awaits you at The George, a beautifully restored 18th-century coaching inn which sits proudly at the top of the historic Robertsbridge High Street.
Surrounded by a wealth of old Wealden Sussex houses, Robertsbridge is in 1066 Country which is an ideal base from which to explore Hastings, Tunbridge Wells, Battle and the surrounding varied countryside of beautiful Kent & Sussex.
Following a full restoration programme, The George features a spacious oak beamed and panelled bar and restaurant area, along with large inglenook fireplace favoured by Hilaire Belloc, bare floorboards, richly textured fabrics, wool and leather chairs and sofas, painted tables and beautiful period pieces. Family portraits of John, Jane and their two small children adorn the walls along with images of Robertsbridge through the decades which were found during the renovation.
Working with only local farmers, fishermen, suppliers and small producers who are all based within a 30-mile radius of The George, the food revolves around the seasons and a core belief in letting the natural flavours of the produce speak for themselves.
If peckish, look to the chalkboards for the day’s dishes, ranging from locally landed lemon sole, Rye Bay scallops, slow-roasted pork belly with Bramley apple spiced compote, or chargrilled lamb rump with minted rösti. Or look to the main menu for a chargrilled rib eye steak, locally smoked fish platter to share or delicious homemade cheeseburger with homemade tomato relish and hand-cut proper chips. Leave room for puddings too which are all homemade, along with the artisan cheeseboard which comes with three local cheeses, homemade spiced apple chutney and honey from The South Downs.
The comfortable bar area with oak and leather furniture which circle the log fire, is the perfect spot to enjoy one of the local ales or hand selected wines, juices or Italian coffees, along with a selection of snacks and homemade goodies!
Upstairs, the Inn has four beautifully decorated bedrooms with Hypnos beds, signature wallpapers, rich fabrics, antique furniture and characterful en suite shower rooms, so whether you are looking for somewhere special to stay, or want to enjoy fabulous Sussex food and drink, come and visit The George today.
