Eastbourne’s first organic hair salon opens – 15% discount

Our purchasing decisions are increasingly influenced by the processes and ingredients required to manufacture a product. Ethical, environmental and health related issues are increasingly considered, as consumers look to protect both themselves and the planet.

This has most notably led to the rise of the organic movement, which has traditionally been associated with food. More recently, however, its influence has come to bear in a host of other areas, including cosmetics.

Whilst ‘natural’ beauty treatments have been available for some time, consumers are now expecting a wider variety of alternatives derived from officially certified organic ingredients. This has come to include hair care products.

For the first time, these are now available in a salon environment in Eastbourne. Local hairdresser Donna Carson has recently launched Chameleon Organic, a Hair Studio on Seaside that covers all aspects of traditional hairdressing, using certified organic products.

“We only use the Organic Colour Systems range,” explains Donna, who has over 15 years of experience in the hairdressing industry. “This includes shampoos and conditioners, colours and styling products.

“The range includes the first-ever collection of permanent colours made from the maximum amount of certified organic ingredients possible. Using these natural ingredients leaves your hair looking healthier, gives it a glossy shine and results in a longer lasting colour.”

Conventional colour treatments contain ammonia and paraphenylenediamine, (or PPD’s), which damage hair and cause allergic reactions. The semi-permanent dyes at Chameleon Organic have neither, whilst the fully permanent options contain only 0.25-0.05% PPD’s, (compared to an industry standard of 2%).

This means they are not only better for the environment, but also safe for expectant mothers and allergy sufferers. It also spells the end of the potent odours and danger of skin staining associated with ammonia based treatments.

The obvious benefits of organic products are one of the major reasons behind the launch of Chameleon. It is an approach that is adopted throughout the business, not just on the treatment shelves. Where possible natural products are always used, from organic refreshments to recycled stationery.

Donna adds: “Organic products have always interested me, given their potential impact on our health and well-being. Opening my own salon has given me the opportunity of introducing a new range and a unique hairdressing concept to Eastbourne.”

Organic options often come at increased costs. Prices at Chameleon, however, compare favourably with other salons. Styling for ladies starts at £15, (cut and finish £27.50), whilst styling for men starts at £10.
